NC-MSEN Pre-College Program

Reflection:

For two years, I had the pleasure of serving as a NC-MSEN student worker. NC-MSEN (Mathematics, Science and Education Network),  is a pre-college program for underepresented 3rd through 12th grade students who plan on pursuing a career in the areas of science, mathematics, technology and engineering. Supplemental activities such as interactive Saturday Academies, guest speakers, and innovative STEM-related workshops are provided to students in order to guide and prepare them to be successful college students.Acknowledging the fact that above-adequate grades are necessary to attend and thrive at a four-year university, tutoring is offered every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the school year in the areas of English, Math, Science, and Foreign Languages. Also, a Summer enrichment program is offered so that students can visit and be exposed to other universities in different areas of the country.

As an MSEN student worker, I assisted with Saturday Academies as well as any other supplemental trips that the students were taken on. I also worked as a Tutor on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, assisting students with their Science homework, whether it involved research, projects, or written assignments, and helped students study for their science tests.

Words cannot describe how fortunate I am to have been given the opportunity of being a student couselor/mentor. As a former MSEN student, it delights me to see how much the program has grown and now as a mentor, it gives me a sense of purpose knowing that I am making a direct impact in the lives of our students. Watching some of the kids grow up and mature and drastically improve in school makes all of the extra time that I sacrificed with them worth it.Being apart of this program has made me a more selfless person and more empathetic to the situations of others, and has also allowed me to make genuine, life-long relationships.  Although it saddens me to be leaving, I can walk away and proudly say that I assisted in encouraging another student to pursue their dream.
